How Safe is Acupuncture?

Safety around the practice of acupuncture is taken very seriously and enforced through regulation in Alberta. In jurisdictions without regulation, it is possible to see increased issues with inadequate training or infection.

Students of acupuncture programs and doctors of acupuncture are trained in hygienic practices to minimize infection risk, while single-use, sterile needles are mandated for use in Alberta. Acupuncture is not without risk, but with stringent training and regulatory framework, the risk is reduced. Trained acupuncturists in Alberta must have a minimum of 3 years of education, which includes point location avoiding structures that can cause injury as much as possible. They are also trained in how to manage adverse events should they arise, and must be up-to-date in CPR.
