TCM Regulation in Alberta
The AAATCMD aims to support TCM through member supports, networking, and collaboration. One project the AAATCMD is currently working on is the regulation of TCM in Alberta. Acupuncture has been a regulated act for many years in Alberta, most recently under Health Professions Act. TCM is only regulated in two provinces: BC and Ontario. The education and use of TCM in Alberta is not currently overseen, protected, or promoted by any regulatory body.
The AAATCMD believes that regulation of TCM will drive the profession forward and align it with other professions under the Health Professions Act, to ensure safe and effective care for Albertans. With enhancements in the profession, TCM would gain increased public trust, as well as greater recognition from stakeholders, such as government and insurance companies. Regulation would also align with other large provinces, leading to better labour mobility for members.
In the coming weeks, you can expect to see member consultations begin, initially in the form of a brief survey. There are many steps and consultation to go through, but please keep an eye out for this formative email. As the process develops, members can expect more communications from AAATCMD, but always feel free to contact us with questions or concerns you may have. Please note this initiative comes from AAATCMD, whereas acupuncture is regulated by CAA, who is mandated in public safety not advocacy.
